Questions a non-resident should answer before buying a rental property in France
Published · Updated · 5 min read
A checklist of questions on objectives, financing, the property, management and tax to work through before committing.
About your objectives
What is the main objective: income, wealth, future use? Over what period? What monthly top-up would you accept in a downside scenario?
About financing
Which banks lend to residents of your country? What deposit is required? How will income in a foreign currency be assessed? An authorised broker can help answer these.
About the property
Is the expected rent supported by comparables? What are the actual running costs? Are works voted or foreseeable in the building? Does the energy rating allow letting over time?
About management and tax
Who will manage the property day to day, and at what cost? What local rules apply to the intended letting? Which tax regime and ownership structure suit your situation — a question to confirm with a regulated professional?
General information only. It is not financial, legal or tax advice; have your situation reviewed by regulated professionals.
